When should I update my will?

  • recently married/divorced/defacto

All adults, whether married, divorced, or just entered into a de-facto relationship, need a Will. Your Will should be updated when your relationships or circumstances change, as marriage and divorce each have important implications for Wills.

  • just bought/sold a property

It's crucial to have a clear and valid Will in place if you have extensive assets, specific wishes on how you want your property distributed, or in particular if you have children.

  • newborn child/grandchild

Having kids means that you need to consider who would look after them if you weren't around, and how you would provide for their future, and how assets should be distributed amongst them and other family members.

  • significant change in financial status

You might have received an inheritance, or won the lotto. Equally, of course, the value of your assets may have decreased. You need to think about changing your Will to take this into account.

  • You don't already have a will

Making a legally binding Will is the only way to guarantee your estate and financial affairs are dealt with exactly as you want when you're no longer here. It gives you the chance to provide for the people who matter to you (your Beneficiaries) and to appoint an Executor you know and trust to administer the Will.

  • Change of Mind

You may decide that you would rather one particular friend or family member receive a gift than another. You may wish to change the Guardians you have appointed for your children. There might be a charity not previously mentioned which you would like to benefit.

  • death of an executor or beneficiary

  • I just got married so my husband and I were looking for an affordable lawyer to get our will done. We dealt with Amy, who was very patient, answered all our questions promptly and the whole process was so seamless. Would definitely recommend!
